Think of the long flowing fins of the betta like a hand line that the crayfish is gonna pull it in with. I do keep a dwarf crayfish with a betta, as does my gf, and my advice is to go with a short fin or a female. Even the dwarf can tear the fins.
Barbs are the best crayfish companions IME.
A full size crayfish needs AT LEAST10 gallons (20 is soooo much better), while the dwarf varieties can happily live in a 5.Show tanks - 125, 125, 90, 10, 5

I really want a crayfish in my tank but after reading a few threads here I am very hesitant. Seems like the dwarf variety are less aggressive but still may occasionally take out a small tank member. Basically they don't seem to recommend them for people that have slow moving fish that like to hang at the bottom or fish with long fins. Even if you think your fish are quick and don't hang near the bottom, check them out at night. I have found my platys like to hang out under cover at the bottom.

They must have taken the video the same day as they put the two together, cause it only takes one night for the fins to get shredded.

Another "nope" from me. I think the crayfish would eat the betta in short order.

All this crayfish talk made me go back to my childhood, so I drove by the old creek I used to play in catching these guys. As hard as I looked for a little guy the only one I could find was over 3" long! That would have been a major find back when I was younger. Maybe come spring I will looks for a little guy maybe about an inch or so. I figure if it doesn't work in my tank and start causing problems I can release it back to the creek, wouldn't want to do that with a store bought one when it is too cold out.
