neon disease
quick question.
I want neon tetras for the 10g, not cardinals. The one thing i am wondering is about neon tetra disease. Do neons just out of the blue get it, like say if i bought five tomorrow, one may catch it in august, or does the fish catch it from the lfs in the groups they are kept in? since i want 15, i cant have 30$ of dead neon floaty things.

first off, dont buy the fish if there is any dead in the tank (u probly already know this) second, if there are some in the tank that arent schooling properly, red flag number one. red flag number two (or should i say lackthereof) is pale coloring, like paler than the rest since they have weak color coming from the lfs to begin with. Diatom filters are good with a tank of neons, since they can help reduce free parasites (its a shame they dont like salt) keep really good water quality.
Most of the time you get it from the store, yes. so your best bet would be to get your whole school at once if you see a fresh healthy shipment, otherwise, buy them a couple at a time, and quarantine them for 2 weeks before putting them in the display tank.
Good luck, I want a school too, they get so bright when people actually care for them!!-75g FW community, planted

i had neon tetras disease in my neons in 2003, and know what it looks like. The problem is most of my lfs's cram the neons so tight you cant even see odd acting ones. I was lucky with my bloodfins and my glowlights that nothing happened. I saw some guy put 10 neons in a 5 discus tank- all the discus got the neon disease

Man that really sucks. Some people just don't feel the need to quarantine until something like that happens. That's what I call locking the barn after the horse was stolen!
