Thread: Mollies

  1. Default Mollies

Right, off to get some Mollies tonight from my not so local LFS.

As you can see from my sig I've got a 33g with some danios at the moment.

What's a good amount to get? I keep on reading 3-4 with 1 male and the rest females? Is this the best way to go?

Also have read that it might be a good idea to add some salt to the tank as mollies are quite prone to disease. Would this be ok on the danios? What type of salt is best? How much should be added?

Thanks in advance for your input!

    Luke

I think one male and 3 gals would work well. Mollys get pretty big and the males can get fiesty. Mollys like hard water and they can live in full salt water. If your tap is hard I would not worry about adding any salt to the tank. I am not sure if the danios would like it or not.

think about your future stocking.. like rick said.. they like hard water, and the other fishes might not. They can live in full freshwater or full saltwater. They are also known for nipping on the fin of other fishes. Just be sure they're compatible with your current stock, or future stocking..

    thanks guys!

As far as future stocking goes i had the following in mind.

    1 dwarf gourami
    1 Bristlenose Pleco
+ a small group of either platys or guppys

Is this going to be OK? Or am I gonna have problems here?

I can't speak of the gourami but I have mollys with guppys, a betta, plattys, neons and BN's. Even had a few with my Angels for a while. I've never had an issue with them getting along. For me these have been the most personable fish I have and seem to get along with everyone. Just make sure if you have a few females that you have something to control the fry population... You will get more! The gourami should work pretty well for that.

As far as salt... personally I've never added a grain of salt to any of my tanks.
