Boiling is a good idea as it will get rid of any nasties. It probably won't make it sink though. Most people use rocks to keep their wood down as it can take months for it to sink on it's own. I tied mine to a large rock with fishing line, wrapping it many, many times incase one strand broke(keep in mind though, that mine is nearly as tall and long as the 60g it's in). If it gets free, it could shoot up through your tank hood.

You should soak wood for at least a week before using it. Sometimes it still floats anyway. You can use rocks or other heavy items to hold it down. Most people would silicone a piece of slate to the wood to hold it down. Or tie it to the slate with fishing line until it will stay submerged on it's own.

Yeah it really a good idea to boil anything you plan to add to your tank.

You should have definitely boiled but more to kill off bacteria and anything lurking within the wood.

However, in order to sink you have to soak it in water for at least a week. I soaked mine for 2 weeks and one of my 4 pieces still wanted to float.

Add some salt and hot water, then let it soak for a day or two, then change out the water for reg water, and let it soak for 2 weeks.

How long did you boil it?
It does work to water log faster.
I clean and soak mine for weeks.I have had some peices held down by rocks for more than a year and they still want to float. Some peices take more time than others.
Be patient and you will find success sooner or later!
