  1. Default Emperor 400 filter

How well would this filter suit a 75g tank? I could compliment with a 20-40 filter as well if need be too. If it can't though, would you recommend a filter capable of running the tank alone?

Also, I am thinking a 300w heater. Sound about right? I have two 75s in there and they are stopping the fish from freezing, but it hovers around 74 and I want the tank around 78. I let it get really cold in here on winter nights too so they'll need the additional strength.

    Thanks for any feedback.

IMO you would need atleast 2*Emp 400s to do the job adequatly. If your having trouble maintaining temp with 1 300watt heater I would strongly suggest adding a second one to help do the job. Ad one at either end near the intake of the filter that will also help disperse the heat threwout the tank.

I agree. You definitly want to have enough heater power, otherwise they will constantly be working and IMO are more likely to malfunction...especially if they aren't top of the line heaters.

I've always over-heated my tanks. Less work on the heaters and less electricity :P
Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years.

I wouldn't go with a HOB filter for that size tank, I would go with a canister filter. Personally, I love the Rena Filstar XP3, you could filter that size tank with it solely. Many people also like Fluval filters.
