Think I just got taken at a local aquarium shop...
I went to a local aquarium shop today to purchase goldfish for my 3.5 gallon tank. I told the guy who owned the place I had a really small tank- 3.5 gallon and asked what type of fish I could put in it. He sold me three good sized goldfish and said they'd be fine. He said to change 1/2 the water every week and add 1/2 teaspoon pond salt. Feed them once a day. I posted on my betta forum about the goldfish and people responded that I need 10 gallons per fish! Do I need to get a bigger tank?

Goldfish are dirty and do indeed need a large tank. Most of the experts here will tell you you'll need more like a 40 or 55 gallon tank for those fish.
8 tanks running now:
1x 220 gallon, 2x55 gallon, 1x40 gallon long, 1x29 gallon, 1x20 gallon long, 1x5.5 gallon, 1x2 gallon
Gouramis, barbs, rasboras, plecos, corys, tetras, fancy guppies, swordtails, ottos, rainbow shark, upside-down catfish, snails, and Max and Sparkles the bettas.

what kind of goldfish? In my opinion, yes you should have a bigger tank.

Yes, you'll deffinitely need a bigger tank. For 3 fancies a 30 gallon will be the minimum, bigger would be alot better.

holy crap. Ok. I'll have to go buy one tomorrow. I am so mad at the owner of that store. really, did he need to make $16 so badly that he'd do this? I certainly won't be buying the bigger tank from him.
thanks for the replies everyone.

My suggestion to anyone, is to PLEASE research the fish you want before buying them....doing this can avoid this type of situation that many find themselves in!

For comparison, I have a 90 gallon tank with 6 fancies in it and am pretty much stocked. Some of the fancy goldfish can live quite a long time, and I have seen them get almost as big as a football!
