Has anyone tried this? I read a few articles that recommended using 1" black soil under 1" of gravel for a planted tank. Any successes?

It's a pretty popular method from what i hear, but be careful of the type of soil you choose, you wouldn't want it leeching out anything that could harm the fish!

I am trying it with a 2.5g betta tank. I use clean, sterilized black earth. I bought it for the plants in my Lizard tank, because it is chemical free and safe.
It did leave my water full of tannins. I guess I just have to wait and see.

Yes, you can use it, but if you ever move anything around, your tank becomes a real mess. Plus, it's organic, so it tend to play havoc with your water parameters under various conditions. Better to just stick with inert substrates (ie Flourite)
