I sprayed mine with two cans of 99cent spray paint. I think mine look awesome. If you do not want to go down the paint path you should check out your LFS again. Most of the backgrounds they carry have a solid color on one side(Usually Black or Blue). That might be an option.

I picked up a piece of black felt for 25 cents to use on the small tank in my office. It works great!

I wouldnt use posterboard. If you do make sure its nice and rough and not glossy. Otherwise its going to show up white with a camera flash, and at night when the lights are off. Im having this problem now, i switched to posterboard figuring it would be easier. I think i'll try felt or something like that next

Ah thanks for the tip. I was planning on getting the glossy kind if I found it. I'll try and find something without a shine to it.

I have used a black plastic paper like material. It had glue already on it. I have it for like a year or so and it looks great

I found a graphics shop that uses vinyl to cut out their letters. You can buy it by the foot. It is sticky on one side. Just remove the paper, spray on some soapy water on the sticky side, place on back of tank and use something like a credit card to smooth out the air bubbles. When it dries is it amazing. Perfect seal that no water can get behind. It also is easy to take off if you decide to change it, and this can be done when the tank is full or empty. I have also used some of the holographic vinyls and they look really neat. If you would like to see a pic of some, let me know.

Kemppy, that is a really neat idea, however for certain tanks it does pose a potential problem. By removing that airspace between the background and the back of the tank, the amount of Photosynthetic Available Radiation (PAR) is reduced by 30% in the back region of the tank. If your tank is not a reef tank or a planted tank this is not a big issue, however if they are, it can have quite the effect on plant or coral growth.

    Hi,
I have only angelfish tanks, and sad to say they are not planted. Only plastic plants for me right now. Maybe someday I can get into the real plants. I have barebottom tanks for breeding.

I would steer clear of posterboard, most types are too glossy and reflect light so at night the backgrounds look white and also in pictures with flash.

Construction-grade paper or felt are rough enough to absorb most of the light, but i hear velvet is extra absorbent so i'll be trying that out next.

I've used fabric before, and it works great. It's super-cheap, and then if you change your mind and want a different color, you can change it.

I can also "open it" like drapes to allow light in for my marimo and plants.

I'm interested in finding out what you decide on! Post pictures!
