Question ordering online vs finding fish locally

I really don't like ordering my fish online, every time I do I have problems. My main thing is that you can't see what your buying. I use to keep discus and every time I ordered online, they died. I recently moved and sold my discus and switched my tank over and now keep rainbows. So even though the fish shops jack up the prices, I prefer to find my fish in the shops. A friend of mine is always trying to talk me into ordering online and against my better judgement i did and the fish I ordered have ich... I am PISSSED! I currently only have one tank running so I had no option but to put them in with my other fish. I am in the process of raising the temp so that the healthy fish don't get it too.

Someone told me to slowly raise the temp to like 89 or 90 and I won't have to use the ich meds, I am going to give it a shot, am I making a mistake?

I just wanted to get your opinion... do you order online? Do you have as many problems with it as I do?

I've ordered several times online with good results, long slow drip acclimation is the key.
I wouldn't have Discus shipped in cold weather.
You should be able to find anything you want in the Atlanta area
As I get older I find myself thinking about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

i have never ordered online, despite the prices usually being cheaper, for exactly the reason you stated, you can never be sure of the level of quality the fish are.

I didn't order discus, they where rainbows. I will never order discus online again.

You can find almost anything in the atlanta area, but for 3 times the price as you find online. There is a bunch of people that get together and order from the wholesale suppliers, so I got my rainbows at $3.00 a piece vs the $15.00 a piece I paid at the fish shop...

i rarely order online, ive had too many bad things happen. the last one was i got a huge coral and fish shipment last july, and when i went to the building to pick everything up, they said there was no styrofoam cooler that was sent. i called the other places to see if they accidentally got it, they said no

turns out 2 employees barely looked, and one nice person bothered to look and they found it. the basslet (hard to find and fairly rare fish) got ick from the whole ordeal and died not long after

I've ordered 6 times from breeders for a total of around 70 fish, had 1 arrive dead, and no problems other than that.
A lot depends on who/where they are ordered from and how well they are packed.
Long slow drip acclimation has worked wonders for me.

I've had great success ordering plants online from one company,(PM me if you want to know which one, first one i used sucked badly, but good results with my current one) but I've never ordered fish. I say I've had great success because i know a friend who has ordered from the same company and has had no luck. Weirdest thing is he lives like 4 blocks away from me. It seems like a great alternative to get those hard to find fish, just haven't really needed to do so, haven't been back in the hobby long enough to even desire anything hard to find. But i prefer buying at a store, I like to see what I'm getting, in not just a picture, but how it behaves.
No matter how much I learn or know I'm still gonna be a NOOB, but that doesn't mean I'm an idiot!

    Online shops
+ more variety, + cheaper, , + find rare fish,
    - shipping fees, - shipping mishaps = dead fish
? - live arrival guarantee varies

    Local shops
    - more pricy, - less variety,
+ no shipping hassles (dead fish), + see it in person, + easier to exchange

In the end both have their good/bad sides. Sometimes the cheaper prices online get offset by shipping costs. I was able to split shipping with someone locally by combining our orders.

Don't forget about any local fish clubs, great source of plants/fish. Can get them a fair bit cheaper at the fish club auctions as well.

Oh for the fish slow acclimating is best. Even longer for shrimp and other invertebrates.

forgot to add another reason i dont shop online much is i can get pretty much any fish you can name locally with no problems, and equipment is cheaper usually in store too. the only reason i sometimes order online is for sales

I've gotten plants and shrimp through the mail before with no problems at all. I'll probably be getting some GBR through the mail sometime soon. I only buy online from trusted sellers (i.e. Algenco and gm72 )
