The biomedia should be in the cleanest area otherwise it can become clogged with all that fine debris that the polishing media is supposed to get.

I thought it was you who said that fishguy!!! My question was how to stack it so it is in the cleanest area, LOL, I had no idea!
My cannister is a jebo 838 (I think) can't figure out how the water comes out clean, there's not dividers or anything to seperate dirty from clean water, LOL, sounds like yours bushwacker, clean and dirty water comes in and goes out at the top, still can't figure out how they work!!!

The cleanest is the top. Water comes in thru the bottom and works it's way up with dirty stuff getting trapped in the media's.

lady hobbs in my magnum there is a tube that comes up from the bottom thats the output.. dirty water flows into the top, is pulled thru the filter media and then out to the tank.. the rena xp3 intake and output are both on top , what i dont understand is the circulation pattern on that filter..

I have two XP3s and I believe if you will look at the underside of the top piece you'll notice that the suction comes out to the side and the output is in the center circle that seals to the top of the media baskets. Here is a link that shows what I'm trying to say.

I have NO idea of how the Magnums work. They are entirely different than a canister filter that sits under the tank so that one is news to me. Canisters have different levels of media that are different than the way the Magnum works.

In the Rena filters, the "dirty" water flows down the side of the cannister, then the water is sucked up through the middle. Since the two "sections" are separate, the water has to get sucked up from the bottom of the cannister, through all the filter media and out through the top. Your coarse filter media (sponge) should be on the bottom, followed by a finer media/sponge.
In my Rena XP2 filter, I have the 20PPI sponge on the bottom, followed by a 30PPI sponge, then the ceramic tubes, active carbon and the micropad on top.
The XP3 has another tray, so you may be able to mix it up a little more. The options in the XP2 is fairly limited. I cannot move the ceramic tubes, as they are in the bottom of the top basket, and moving them to the top of the basket means I would have to remove them every time I clean out the filter...30G (long) 1 Gold Gourami, 1 Platinum Gourami, 1 Red Dwarf Gourami, 1 Angel fish, 2 Serpae Tetras, 3 Headlight Tetras, 1 Black Sail Cory, 3 Peppered Corys.
