Silver Dollars and dirty water
What is it with these guys. Usually water changes promote spawning with fish but with my Dollars, let the water go without their water change and they spawn like crazy. I don't get it.
They're suppose to not like higher nitrates, as well. I wanted to change their water today but they're having so much fun, I hate to interupt them.
Going strong 6 hours now.

it could have something to do with when they spawn in the wild.
Fresh clean water occurs in the rainy season and also means strong currents,
stagnant water has little or no current to wash eggs away,, maybe? As I get older I find myself thinking about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

I totally agree Hobbs, mine do it to! The longer I leave it between water changes, the more they go at it LOL.

Al has a good theory there. I also suspect some environmental factor in their native place, thats the only thing that makes much sense.

Strange, isn't it. Makes me think in this particular fish, they like the higher nitrates. I just stole this info from the internet.

But Wow. I don't keep my temps that high for them. More like about 78 but I'm not looking for a spawn either as I can hardly use 2000 babies. I did put moss in their tank and they are NOT eating it and are laying their eggs in it.Cycling With Fish?•• The Fishless Cycle••

My temp isn't that high either, I've always only had mine about 24C (I think about 75F)
Don't think they are that fussy, I think they just like going at it! LOL

My other fish think the eggs are a treat, LOL, you should see them when she's spitting the eggs, out, they follow around behind like it's a big smorgasboard!!!
That's how I know they are at it again sometimes, it's follow the leader round the tank.

Not to worry. My featherfins are spending a lot of time in that moss where the eggs were dumped. They'll eat them up.
