Thread: Chipped Tank
02-16-2009, 12:14 PM #1
I picked up a 55g tank yesterday that I found on craigslist and while moving it into my apartment I slipped and it smacked against the door frame, leaving chipped sections of the glass on the corner of the tank. There are chips on both corners of the left side of the tank. Have I broken this thing? I'm scared that it won't hold water and be easier to burst. I have silicon for tanks, but I'm not sure how it works on the outside of the tank or if it would even be effective.
I took some pics of the damage, but I can't find my USB cord that connects from my camera to the computer.

I'd be worried that the tank will leak. Water exerts an incredible amount of pressure on the glass, and a chip will compromise the strength of the glass. I'm not sure if it can be repaired, but I'm doubting it...Someone with more expertise in this area will be along...Sharon

Depends on the size of the chip - the location and how thick the glass is... the corners with sealent are what keeps the whole thing together...if it is chipped down close to the sealent I would be pretty worried about it bursting also due to the pressure on the weakend spot.
