A new tank ornament smell.
In my new second 20g tank i put a fake hollow log for my Paradise fish to hide in, it looks pretty good but now the tank smells funny, i made sure i soaked the log and washed it the best i could, has anyone else had this trouble and should i take it out?, i'm a bit worried that it might harm the fish although they seem to be doing ok.

No, it's a new tank, all the fish are there, i don't over feed them, i do water changes.
I might just have to take out the log and see what happens.Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn. ~Chuck Clark

Maybe you can take the log out and smell it to see if it really is the log that's making it smell.

Weird...I would not expect a fake log to give off any smell, especially if it was well washed/rinsed first. Odd. Are you sure that the fake log is okay for aquariums?

It's definately for aquariums, i made sure at the store, i think i'll just do a process of ellimination, start with the log and go from there, it's hard to know where it's coming from because everything in the tank smells the same now.

I'm new here and don't know much... but I've noticed that I'm currently cycling my tank and it's taken on a littlel bit of a "lake" type odor. Is this what you're talking about or is your smell similar to something having died?
Just thought I'd mention my tank has a little bit of a musty (lake) smell to it. I thought it was normal.Yup, I got fish!

Well everybody, i think the log was the problem, i took it out and the tank does'nt seem to be as strong and maybe it was'nt real good for the fish because my Black Skirts fins are really black now instead of grey.

Hi there slimey,
If ever you feel/smell somthing isn't right in you tank, the best thing you can do to get help would probably be to post your water parameters like this:-
pH:
Nitrate:
Nitrite:
Amonia:
That way whoever comes on to give you any help/advice can rule out any urgent action (i.e. poisoning, spikes) such as drastic water changes. I know that on this occasion you were able to pinpoint the cause which turned out to be the log, but another time you may well wake up to some floating fish and I guess its better to be safe than sorry.
I'm glad all ended well for you, just out of interest, what else do you keep with your paradise fish. I have free space in a tank and am exploring all different types of setups. Do you have any pictures of your fish that would be great.
