How can they be proud??

What cocoa pleco is referring to are dyed fish. He is saying how can they be proud of such a cruel mistreatment to fish.

They are proud because they don't know any better, or feel like they "Saved" the poor fish. If no one buys them, the die in the store. So, not only were they cruelly treated, they have a short meaningless life.

The unfortunate part is, by "saving" them they are encouraging the mistreatment of them by buying them and giving companies business

I don't see how or why people do such things to animals? I mean, people don't go around tattooing dogs and cats (well, not normal people).

Sadly people dont have the same regard for fish as they do cats and dogs

Not that this has anything to do with anything, but there are vets that can tattoo as a means of identification for animals. It's on and off in popularity, and they're always looking for better places on the body to tattoo, better means of visual clarity, etc. Years ago, Greyhounds (the ex-racers that are put up for adoption) were being tattooed inside their ears for identification, and people were chopping off their ears and donating the dogs to medical research, slaughterhouses/rendering facilities, instead of attempting to find their owner via the tattoo.
