New Aquaclear 50 NOISY!
Ok, so I picked up a new AC50 for my 20 long and like all new ACs (including AC20 and AC30) it has a NOISY impeller. My other ACs eventually broke in and the impellers developed a slime coat and quieted down. But, the bigger the AC, the louder the impeller noise.
So, should I :
1. Let the new AC50 run for a few more days and collect biofilm and see if gets quieter?
OR
2. Take it back and trade for another AC50 with the hopes of getting a quiet impeller from the start?
The place that I bought the AC50 from has a 14 day return policy of which 3 days are gone.
When in doubt, do a water change.

I'd take it back. Like you said, some are noisy and then quiet down, but it's better to just return it and get another that will likely be quiet from the get-go.

I don't know, but I'd be inclined to try another brand of filter...

I would contact the store. It should run silent.
You could also contact Aqua clear and ask them whats up.
They should stand behind their product.Ray

I would take it back and get another one. Aquaclears are very quiet, yours may have some defect causing the noise.

My 110 is silent and always has been. The only time it made noise was when I didn't have the stem seated down firmly and some sand got inside.
If you have a bubbler or airstone in the tank, make sure it is not under the uplift tube as it will get air in the filter making noise.Cycling With Fish?•• The Fishless Cycle••

Yep! I hear everyone. I'm taking the NOISY AC50 back today!! It's odd..I have an AC20 and AC30 that run silently too! Here's to hoping I don't get another bad one. Thanks for all the replies.

I just bought an AC-50 and it is super quiet. It was right from the start. But yeah, I would return that one too if I were you.
