Sexing Salvinis
OK...I've managed to get some pictures of the one that I think is male...
The supposed female is having nothing to do with venturing in front of the camera, or anywhere else for that matter...I'll keep trying!Sharon

From what I could find, sexually mature males only two-thrids grown develop a red blotch in the ventral body/anal fin region. Not sure if that helps at all.
Thar she blows!!!

Hi Sharon,
Dont know much about the fish or how to sex it, but out of curosity I looked it up following another thread you posted. The ones I saw on the internet were very colourful indeed. And you say, your 'pair' do not seem to get along. My original kribs who did not get along never coloured up that much and chased each other quite a bit. When I changed the male and introduced the female, the attraction was instant. They chased momentarily and then swam together then started displaying and then coloured up straightaway.
Have you had them long? I have not been on lately, did I miss a post when you purchased them? They sure are pretty fish. I wish I could help you at some stage, people are always dishing out pretty good advice to me - one day eh?

Sorry Sharon, I should have done my homework more thoroughly. I have just read about the breed and the male can be aggresive towards the female. Has pointier finnage and the female has a spot on her dorsal and gill cover, but I guess you probably already know that. Beautiful fish though - wish I had the space.Last edited by Jellygirl; 01-29-2009 at 06:01 PM.

Michelle, that's the criteria I used when I purchased...That's basically the last time I saw the female, other than a fleeting glimpse. She has a bite taken from her tail, and is very shy. The male can't stand the sight of her, and if she pokes out, he chases her. If I could get a good look, I might be able to compare them a little better...

I read that they grow to about 6/7". What tank are they in? Have you had them long? I guess I dont know much about them. Are yours juvenile fish?
Sorry so many questions.

They're in the 29gal tank, Michelle. I read conflicting info about tank size for a pair, so I'm trying it. Of course, I didn't count on putting Frank in there as well!!! If there's serious trouble, I'll rehome the female...

I am 99% sure your right Sharon. But I can't see the markings on his dorsal fin to be 100%. Personally if you do have to get rid of one I would get rid of the male as they are far less colourful than the females.

Great shots too.

Well the elusive Salvini is a little braver today. She actually ate beside the male. I got a better look, and there is a spot in the middle of the dorsal fin, so I'm thinking female. I'll get a pic as soon as she allows it...

I'm pleased the 'female' has ventured out. It's looking hopeful then - just goes to show how much I know about fish. It would be lovely if you do have a pair rather than having to rehome one or the other. Not only fry but a happy very colourful couple.
