Thread: Probiotic Food

  1. Default Probiotic Food

    Hi Everyone,

So I popped in to get some fish from my LFS and they had a sign up.

"We only use Pro-biotic fish food"

Interested i got home and did a little good search.

    http://www.ntlabs.co.uk/products/Tro...Fish-Food.html

"The only Probiotic diet on the UK market for all common community tropical fish species. A highly digestible food that produces amazingly low waste which helps keep your aquarium cleaner for longer."

A little more reading turned up similar literature but no real hard evidence. Has anyone in the community tried this stuff? have you seen any results?

I trust the LFS only because of the number of awards they have won in the past 10 years but I don't really want to jump on their marketing just in case. If no one has tried it before ill give it a go but is it too good to be true??

It does work and is just organic eating heterotrophic bacteria that have been used for years in waste management. The term probiotics is just a marketing phrase. But for the money you spend on probiotic fish food, I would refrain from buying it. There is a cheaper option, but you would have to find the equivalent in the UK. Basically, it's bacteria used for septic tanks. In the US we have powder RID-X, and in Canada they have Septo-Bac. I've used it myself and have seen a dramatic decrease in the brown detritus in the hoses of my canister filters.

Here's a link to people using organic eating bacteria:
