This is all you need to know abotu overdriving: ODNO Primer. It even has pictures to help you with the wiring!
Use T8 bulbs and you get less restrike than T12. Philips makes a T8 6500k bulb, which is what I use. SOme folks think a single 4x ODNO bulb iputs out the equivalent of 125 regular flourescent watts (when you factor in the increased intesity/lumens/etc).
My grow-out tank in the basement is a shoplight fixture that I retrofitted with 2 electronic ballasts inside..1 is a 2x and the other is a 4x. It puts out some serious light.

I have noticed that there are certain ballasts which don't fit the wiring scheme illustrated in either the link I supplied nor the one above. Below is a wiring diagram from a Lithonia lamp in Normal output and what I believe is the over driven configuration. (Corrections are welcome lol)
