Red Humped EarthEaters
Red Humped EarthEaters
Org: Colombia, Venezuela
Size: Males up to 6 inches, females half to two-thirds the size
Sexing: Males develop large nuchal hump which females do not
Males typically have some modest iridescent spangling (green, blue, orange) on their flanks while females are drably colored
The Red Humped Eartheater is an excellent beginner's cichlid. Males can be agressive and dominant at times, but these fish prefer a community orientated tank. They are a harem species, which means one male to multiple females. This practice will not only curb agression, but put less stress on a single female when there are a couple more to chase. They are totally undemanding in dietary and water requirements and will spawn at a small size (1.5 - 2 inches). These are immediate mouthbrooders. Ripe females choose and clean a suitable spot (mine always choose clay pots), then solicit the male to participate. Eggs are laid a few at a time, with the female backing up to scoop them into her mouth. The male then spreads his sperm over the substrate where the eggs are being laid and she scoops this up with the next batch of eggs. Spawns typically number 30 - 50. Fry become free swimming about 10 days after spawning. Females will not eat when mouthbrooding. Females kept as a harem will ripen together and spawn nearly synchronously. Fry are large and easy to raise on crushed flakes.
Red Humped Eartheaters are always picking at the substrate as they are sand sifters. They prefer sand bottoms but it is not necessary. When they are big enough they will actually blow sand/rocks out of their gills while sifting the substrate for food. Excellent scavenegers and will eat at every level of the tank. They can uproot plants very easily, but I've seen them kept with java fern and java moss attached to wood.
