I got a new tank. Need info?
So I picked up a new tank and stand today and have a few question?($30.00)
1) How many gallons is it? It's 4ft long, 17in high and 12in wide.
2) Whats the best way to clean it?
3) How much rock do I need?
4) It came with a Diatom Filter and a bag of some sort of powder. How does this work and where can I get more info on this filter. I dont see any sort of model number. only us pat. no. 3,458,441
Thank you!!!

1. There is a calculator over there <------
Its a 160 liter tank
2.Scrub it with bleach and rinse until you cant smell it anymore, you can use vinegar on those white residue spots
3.It depends on what substrate you want to use
4.I would toss that junk out and just stuff with filter with your favorite media, floss, sponge, whatever.

I should have mentioned it for fresh water. Are you saying to get rid of the complete diatom filter altogether? What kind of filter would you suggest? A hang on back or under rock filter?
Thank you for the help

I prefer to use HOBs cuz they are cheap and effective. If you wanna shell out some extra dough canisters are good too. I usually dont recommend under gravel filters but some may recommend them, but say to reverse the flow with a powerhead.
The best for each seem to usually be Aqua Clear HOBS
and Fluval for canisters

Killer price for the tank.Test it first, fill for 3 days and check it.Unless the tank was running when you first saw it.
I agree. Avoid the headache and forget the UGF!
They are more trouble than they are worth.Aqua-clear has about the best and easiest filter out there.
Start with a about 15 lbs.Try and get about 2" of gravel or sand.Last edited by Northernguy; 12-06-2008 at 11:53 PM.

Hi,
IMO I would suggest getting a Fluval 3plus internal filter. They are quite cheap about $100.00 New Zealand Dollars, and they are very good at cleaning out a tank. Wonderfully quite. easy t clean, and set-up.
