its not really the brand that matters. you just need quality glass, with quality silicon. some stores i know make their own tanks, and sell them for about 30% cheaper than actual brands like hagen or geo-system. I used to have a glass 300g tank that i paid 50 bucks for, used, but looked homemade with no leaks or troubles. If you want to keep the tank for quite a few years, go with acrylic, since you do not need to replace the silicon every 15-20 years, but buffering scratches can be a pain. For starter kits, go with brand name sets. although, if you just buy the tank, you can get a quality canister filter and a heater separate too.
it just depends on what you want.

All my tanks are Hagen. I have never had a leak or breakage (knock on wood). My 55g is almost as old as I am, and my 33g was purchased in the late 60's.

Perfecto/Marineland and All-Glass are both very good. I highly suggest not going with acrylic if you like seeing your fish, the scratches will inevitably be too distracting for the relaxing purpose of watching your fish. The whole point of aquariums is to see the fish and I don't know why they thought using an easily scratched material was a good idea for that. I personally wouldn't trust homemade or store made because the big companies do this for a living, make high quality tanks. They usually also include a warranty. I just wouldn't trust the destructive power of a broken tank to who knows who in the back of some pet shop or in some basement somewhere.

Sea-Clear, AllGlass and Tencor are all name brands. Glass Cages is another. Mine are AllGlass.
