Suicidal Silver Dollar??
Hi there,
I have a large tank with a few different species that all seem to get along fine - clown loaches, silver dollars, frontosa. We had a bad case of fin rot and white spot and lost quite few other fish a few months ago but all has been well for a while now. Until tonight. One of my dollars has gone mental! I could hear a banging from the other room and when I came to check, the fish was flinging itself against the side, then the toof, then any rock in the tank! It was quite a sight! He seems to have smashed up his nose a bit, some blood but the rest of him looks ok. All my measurements are at normal levels and the other fish are doing their own thing.
Dare I ask, what on earth has got into this fish? Has anyone seen this before? Should I be really worried cause I have to say I am more than a little concerned!
Cheers

He got spooked and panicked. Probably the more stuff he rammed into, the more panicky he became. Could it be the frontosa was after him?

Hi all,
thanks for your replies :-) It is a 4 foot tank, will try and work on some pics over the next few days. I dont know many technical details about it, has a bubble curtain at the back and the filter is 2000l/h internal one...what details do you need? I have had the tank for nearly 3 years and do change over every 3 or 4 weeks (i also have 2 young kids so time is in short supply) and they have all been fine till recently) he seems to have settled down a bit but still has his moments! I have been keeping an eye on the front, but he seems to be having his own set of issues of late. He has taken to sulking in the corner and not being very social at all - in fact I only see him out for feed the last week or so. The original episode, the only fish out and about where the dollars so unless his mate has attitude....dont know. They all definitely have their own personalities!

I agree with Hobbs, if he got spooked and ran into somthing, it will spook them again. I have my dollars do that sometimes, my female more than the male, yet my male does it sometimes too, especially if I accidently bang the glass lid on the tank when putting it back on. I think it nearly takes them a week to get over it!!!! VERY skittish fish.

When you said you change over every 3 or 4 weeks,Did you mean water changes?
Do you have a water test kit?
Water should be changed up to 50% every week.Ray

Yeah, water changes. I do have a test kit (still trying to decifer what some readings actually mean) and I do try to do more often when I can. We have level 5 water restrictions in place as well so that limits how often I can do anything water-related :-(
