    Default very gentle cichlids....

I always loved the south american eartheaters! They are a whole genus of docile and beautiful cichlids. Great scavenegers, nice colors, and they can tolerate almost any other cichlids. Not to mention, if you use sand as a substrate, they will 'sift' through, pushing clouds of sand out their gills.
I keep 1 male redhumped eartheater with 3 females. They almost lay eggs simultaneously.

I did a Geophagan primer some time ago, including your red humps. It's here. This post is about passive Cichlids, aka Mellow Fellows.

    Just a bump . . .

The keyhole is also a rather easily obtained and mellow cichlid, and is reasonably hearty. I have close to 50 fish now (not in the same tank) ranging from $2.99 to $49.99 and my little $11 3'' keyhole is by far my favorite.

Keyholes are already in my Dwarf Cichlid primer.

+1 to Oscars being docile. However from my experience albino oscars are more mellow than their black tiger/red. I even had a 6.5" albino tiger oscar I had to sell due to him being bullied by black tiger oscars smaller than him. I have a big 9.5" Albino Red Oscar who is very mellow, it doesn't mean he'll let himself be bullied but he'll never start a fight unlike my other big tiger oscars.
So if you want a mellow oscar, my opinion is to get an albino oscar.
One more mellow guy IMHO is a Chocolate Cichlid. I have two, a 5" one is in the Oscar tank and is totally fine, he doesn't get bullied and does not bully anyone. The other one is 3.5" and is in a 20g grow out tank with Gouramis and a Dojo Loach. Absolutely zero aggression. Here's a 1 month old pic of one of mine, now it's 5"

Also a Green Terror is a great and mellow Cichlid. It's really beautiful and very docile. Does not bully anyone, lives in an Oscar tank. Here's my 5"
