I've actually seen the blueberry sunset gouramisas well as laser etched ballon mollies in pet stores( pet supplies plus)...hideous! the needle mark left behind is huge. petsmart may not be the best pet supermarket but at least they won"t sell dyed fish. well at least no in ohio.

Typical newbie question but bear with me, where did this whole trend start, dyeing of fish. Is it done for status, having a "unique" coloured fish?

I've always wondered if my white tetras where dyed/injected. When I got them (from the local markets about 3 years ago), one had a distint pink line and the other purple. The purple has since died but I still have the "pink".

Most likely yes. White skirt tetras are a frequent dying target, and I'm not aware of any natural way to get a white/black/albino skirt tetra pink or purple.

I could be mistaken, but I believe it started, and is still mostly performed, in Asia. (yeah that's a real precise answer, huh?) Many people are interested in colorful, unique looking fish without knowing or worrying about what has been sacrificed to get the fish that way. For that reason, fish such as this turn a tidy profit, so the practice continues.

Why can people be so cruel? It should be illegal to dye fish. The site is good, some of those fish I've never heard of. The pics won't show on my computer though and when I google the fish it's not there.
