Dispelling Some Myths about Adding Salt to FW Aquariums

One more item to note about the addition of salt to your aquarium. If you have catfish, especially cories, adding salt will definitely help with stopping disease almost as much as frying or sauteeing them. Several species of cories have a very low tolerance to salt so while you might kill the parasite and save some of your fish, you may also kill others such as cories. Be careful to know your fish's tolerance to salt levels before you add it.

I don't argue the no salt vs add salt thing with anybody, there are too many AVID advocators of both. While I personally don't use salt except to treat disease (and that was only once, lol), I also can't argue with those who use it and say they have thriving fish.
So I just tell people I don't use it - I actually don't add ANYthing to my tanks, not even slime coats or dechlorinators as I have well water.
It never really made any sense to me to add salt to a freshwater tank - isn't that what freshwater means? So I let them look at my tank and healthy fish and see for themselves that you can have fine looking fish without salt...

But what if your tank is 1 month old and you have 1 fish introduced with 2 spots of ich on it,and only in the tank for 3 days,Would it be a good idea to try the salt to slow the ich down ,

I say this because if there was no ich to begin with then it won't be able to tolerate it and build a natural defense against it? right?

You are treating with meds at the moment (right?) so the addition of salt isnt going to do anything for you except further stress out your fish, skip it.

After reviewing your other thread you are on the right track, just make sure you treat 5-7 days after the last signs of ich so you dont get an encore appearance.
