The answer to this would really have to be species specific. There isn't a "one size fits all" when it comes to gar...there average max sizes in captivity normally fall anywhere between 18" to 60" depending on the species in question. If you can find out what species you are looking at...I can give you a more accurate answer.

depends on the species. a 24" one would need a tank 72x36x22, 36" one would need a tank 96x48x24, and so on

Here is a list of rough max sizes of Gar in captivity...by species.
Florida Gar (Lepisosteus platyrhincus) - 18-24 inches
Spotted Gar (Lepisosteus oculatus) - 18-24 inches
Shortnose Gar (Lepisosteus platostomus) - 18-20 inches
Longnose Gar (Lepisosteus osseus) - 24-36 inches
Tropical Gar (Atractosteus tropicus) - 18-24 inches
Cuban Gar (Atractosteus tristoechus) - 20-30 inches
Alligator Gar (Atractosteus spatula) - 40+ inches
These are all rough estimates and there will always be exceptions to these sizes.Last edited by Demjor19; 12-02-2008 at 03:18 PM.
