In my experience, I'd add Cardinal Tetras to the list. Over the past 2 months I've gone through 55 of them and haven't had one survive. I have kept German Blue Rams happy, but I can't seem to make these guys work, despite having ridiculously perfect water conditions.

I had an iridescent shark in a 16g as a begginer. It grew to about 5in then i sold it back to the pet store after doing some research. Can't always trust your LFS.

I totally agree with Plecos and Goldfish! Also, all saltwater fish.
But I think a bigger issue is "big" fish. I think everyone (including myself) should start with smaller or juvenile fish, for multiple reasons, including that adult fish are already in stable tanks and adding them to a "newb" tank like myself could kill the fish (the lvls arn't right, tank isn't right size, wrong decorations, wrong food, etc etc)RIP Shark Bait, my Red Tail Shark :(

Not true at all. There are lots of suitable SW fish for beginners. Anyone, beginner or not, is capable of doing a SW tank with the proper research and application of that research.

yes I agree with you that there are easier ways to do... I guess a fish only isn't that bad... I would still consider it harder to get started with than a FW tank...
