  1. Default Canister Filter Question

I have filled our tank with water and started our Eheim canister filter today. In the manual it shows I can set the filter for stream function or 12 hour bio function, but doesn't list what the advantages of those functions would be. I have read four books and I can't find any mention of those functions.

Any reason to use stream or 12 hour bio functions? Just for specialized fish tanks? Tomorrow we plan to get our Zebra Danios and start our cycle!

???? I run exclusively Eheim filters and have never heard of such a thing. Can you elaborate?
    8 tanks running now:
    1x 220 gallon, 2x55 gallon, 1x40 gallon long, 1x29 gallon, 1x20 gallon long, 1x5.5 gallon, 1x2 gallon
Gouramis, barbs, rasboras, plecos, corys, tetras, fancy guppies, swordtails, ottos, rainbow shark, upside-down catfish, snails, and Max and Sparkles the bettas.

I have the Eheim 2076. In the manual there is a section for function overview.

    Per the manual --

stream function - The electronically controlled alternating stream assures near-natural stream conditions in the aquarium.

12h bio function - Electronic alternation between two settable flowrates in a 12-hour rhythm.

I just have the filter set on constant flow. I will check the Eheim website and see if they expand on this there.

Tried to edit - ran out of time --

I went to the Eheim website. They have a nice video describing my filter's features. So now I understand the stream and 12h bio functions in theory, but not really the advantages they offer my tank. Or if they're really even necessary.

With the 12h bio function, I can set the filter to run on high output during the day and a lower output at night. The video says this is good for plants. It doesn't say why it's good for plants, or if it's any good for the fish.

This is our first tank, and too many options can be overwhelming. Thanks for any info you can give!

Regardless of how you set it, you will still have your biological filtration happeneing in your tank, despite the name "12 hr. bio. function." It sounds like it is all up to your personal preference. If you have live plants, try the 12 hr. deal....if not, try the other way. Either way, you'll be just fine. Sounds like a good filter. Ehaim makes really good stuff. Good luck with it!

Really interesting, never heard of such a thing. I don't know that an alternating current for day vs. night is necessary, but I also don't know that it would hurt. I'll be interested to hear more about your experience with this filter.

this is justa guess first off

just had to make that clear

maybe its a FW vs SW thing

sw would have tides and alternating currents (i guess)

and a constant stream just soundslike your average river creek or stream.

    just a theroy
    I mainly have cichlids

African cichlids of all sorts, green terrors, jack dempseys, apistogramma caucatoides, PELVICACHROMIS TAENIATUS "bipindi and molwie" ,angelfish, few syno cats petricola and brichardi,7 plecos will name provide L numbers in the future, dwaf rainbow fish, red tail shark, 1.5 million guppies, and of course I can't forget the about the fish I forgot....yeah them too.

johnpeezy, that makes sense. My worry with the alternating flowrates was not turning over the tank water enough. I've just got it at a constant flow. The Danios love to play in the filter return current. It's pretty fun to watch. Almost 24 hours into cycling the tank.
