crushed coral, if it is for a substrate will not be a good idea unless you are assured that it is not sharp. Puffers don't have scales, they have skin. It can be damaged far more easily on sharp objects. I know that they are around sharp things in the sea, but what's a little more caution???

I'd recommend feeding them sort sort of crustacean or mollusk with every feeding to keep their ever-growing beaks worn down.

I no longer feed my GSPs snails because I've got other foods readily available which accomplish the same 'dental' goal, but when I did provide snails, I'd give ramshorn snails, 3 or 4 per feeding.

Try to avoid offering malaysian trumpet snails; supposedly their snails are so hard that a GSP could crack their beaks trying to eat them. My GSP could eat the smaller trumpet snails but shells longer than 1cm were practically impervious. It doesn't matter how large the ramshorn snails are (the larger the better, I suppose).

I think whole frozen prawn are a great substitute due to their shells and nutritional value (these days I feed mine prawn, krill, clams in shell, mussels in shell, and raw shrimp in shell, including the tails).
