  1. Default Using DIY live rock

I've been considering the 2lb/g ratio for LR but DIY LR may weigh differently (I might use the crushed shell/portland cement mix). I expect that surface area will also be different if I make some of the rocks thin and flat. I have these questions.

    1. How do I adapt the weight/volume ratio for DIY LR?

    2. Will making it for increased surface area reduce the amount of LR needed in the tank?

    3. Is there such a thing as a problem with too much LR?

I sure hope your home made LR project advances faster then mine has!!! lol It's been 4 months since I started and the Ph levels are just now getting down to a point that I will start curing soon.

I don't believe in any lb/g ratio. I think you should add enough rock to make it look like you want. Some rock is denser then others. As long as the rock is porous enough to support de-nitrification, you'll be fine.

If you have to pack the rock so tightly that water can reasonably flow around it, then you've got too much. If it obstructs the flow in the tank it can also be a problem. Again, just add what looks good to you.

Hehe. I had two choices. Outlay a small fortune on what is virtually an experiment, risk losing it and learn little, or, build it up slowly myself, learn plenty, get the shapes I want and potentially save some swimming space with efficient rocks, and save enough to cover the cost of other accessories. The only downside is time. I don't expect too much for some months yet..

Now that's what I wanted to hear! Seriously though, I accept your suggestion and will try to put in as much as I can without interfering too much with the aesthetics and swimmability of the tank.
