Mad Beyond Belief........
Well my brother has been bugging my mom for a fish, so she finally caved and said fine ill get you one. I told her he will need a 10 gallon tank, and filter and heater and she laughed and said, yeah right, were just going to put it in your tanks!!! What the H3)( Just because I have my own tanks dosnt mean that you can put what ever the F&$! you want in them, im so sick of this, I have my sisters red tailed shark, danio, and blue gourami. Well now my brother has decided to get himself a rusty cichlid because my mother fails to understand that I had raised the money myself. Well I am going to need more rustys for my 75g but still it annoys me. So anyways, has anything of this nature happend to you, or any fishy stories lol

Sorry Ryuu. These must be the perils or growing up in a big family. (My brother and sister are much older than me, and so I pretty much grew up alone, and didn't have to deal with this stuff.)

I think people need to understand in your family that what is yours is yours. If this is a family tank, then that's another matter.

When I had my freshwater I had some cichlids and tiger barbs. Well, my in-laws keep buying my daughter fish for their house, but always neglected them. So I had to try to have some bettas in my main tank that didn't do so well.
In the past year she's had.
2 lizards
2 parakeets
2 turtles --one of them was set free
2 fish
All the above have died.

Yeah I've tried to tell them that I have a specific thing going on, yet they don't seem to understand that. My favorite excuse though, is when my sister, and brother today, were going to keep the rusty and the gourami in a 2.5 gallon tank, I told my mom ill take them since thats like living in a closet for them. Her response is always, "Its just a fish!" I absolutly hate thoose words.

Hard to deal with an 'it's just fish attitude'.
I grew up in a really big family and have dealt with exactly this situation before. Usually, the sibling who didn't work hard to earn the pet and do a lot of research lost interest in it quickly. I suspect that may happen here, and once the novelty of having a fish wears off you'll end up having had your mom pay for a rusty that ends up really being yours. :)
Also, maybe you could bypass your mom a little bit and talk directly to your brother about what you are planning to do with your tanks and what awesome fish would be the happiest and healthiest in your set-up. If he isn't just passing through a fishy phase, you could probably teach him a lot and gain a helper for some of the grunt work involved in the hobby. Maybe if you present it right you can get him excited about the fish that work for you?
If you start him studying/ helping out, he could lose interest quickly, or get so involved that he decides he wants a real project of his own.
Either way, I hope it works out and this doesn't add too much frustration to your hobby.

Go and stand up to your Mom. Tell her it's your tank, and you are the one who decides what to put in it, and that if your brother(s)/sister(s) keep adding fish to your tanks, those fish are going to die sooner.
Do what Allecto said, and try to get your brother into fish so you can convince him to know that it's your tank, and you are going to pick out some amazing fish, and that he should ask his Mom for his own tank so he can have even more fish, with an exciting tone, lol.
But seriously, you do not have to stand for your Mom doing that to you, unless your Mom went and bought you your tank. You can always stock the tank completely, and say to your Mom "Oh, sorry, there's no room for any more fish, unless they are going to live uncomfortably. My brother will just have to get his own tank if he wants any more fish."Last edited by Tigerbarb; 08-09-2008 at 07:57 PM.

Oh, I had a few computer problems so this was divided into two posts: It makes me twice as mad to know that you are not standing up to your Mom. It's very simple, you just put your foot down and say that your siblings need their own tanks, and that's that. You say it, you mean it, and you don't allow yourself to be questioned. Say it, don't allow her to talk, and just walk away, ending the conversation on that note.
