  1. Default Help with breeding

    Hello all,

I used to work in pet stores part time to support my "Habit" I love fish that eat feeders. Well now that I am getting back into aquatic life I have a preditor tank that is eating me out of house and home...lol

I have decided to try to raise my own feeder fish. So all that said

    1) I am looking for suggestions on the most prolific fish I can breed for feeders and how I need to set this up?

    2) Also any input on what kind of yeild I can expect woudl be great.

Thanx in advance I just joined this site and im very impressed with the community.

I do not know of a fish that will breed fast enough in small #'s to keep up with even one cichlid or other meat eater.

Mollies if good sized can drop about 30-50 fry every 1.5 months or so. Then you have the time needed to let them grow to a decent size to feed. I have 200+ fry now out of 3 females and 2 males in 3 months. but if another batch is dropped before some of the bigger ones go I will have to setup a third tank. I would say 4 to 5 month before they are a decent feeder size.

Multiple tanks and you might be able to pull it off.... Guppies are probably the most common type of fish used for this purpose. I just don't know if the cost of food, water, elec, and other stuff is worth the hassle.

Feeder guppies are the most profilic IMO. Just set up a 20 gallon with java moss and pretty soon you'll have plenty to feed to your fish.
