  1. Default Quiet Canister Filter?

    Hi all,
I received my 36 gallon BF tank today. The tank, once set up will be about 4 feet from my bed. I'll be building a stand & canopy for it but was wondering if anyone has recommendations for a really quite canister filter. I really need it to be quiet as I am somewhat of a light sleeper! I wouldn't imagine I would need a huge filter for a 36 gallon tank, but any recommendations? I have the Eheim 2128 on my 75g at work & it is pretty loud. The other thing I was curious about is where you guys buy from (who has the best deals).
    Thanks for the help!
    M

If anyone has a different suggestion for filtration I'm open to ideas. I figured that canisters typically work the best with the least amount of maintenance. Since I purchased my first canister I haven't purchased any other type of filter (other than a powerhead) I certainly won't be neglecting the tank, but it would be nice to have the lowest maintenance setup possible.
    Thanks,
    M.

I prefer Fluvals simply because I have not found it necessary to spend the extra money on Eheims when the Fluvals have been more than great for the past ten years for me (and are now even better with the 05 line).

My 40high has a Fluval 405. This would be my suggestion. Although you may be able to get away with a 305, I prefer to get more filtration for the little price difference in the two.

I get all my stuff from my work because I get such a great discount. bigalsonline.com, thatpetplace.com, and drsfostersmith, com are all great places to check.

What are you planning to put in the tank?

We recently purchased a cascade 1000 and i can't even tell its running unless you put your ear up to it. It was pretty cheap too.

I was thinking about some Rainbowfish, particularly Melanotaenia praecox (neon Blue RBF). I'd probably put some neon tetras in there as well to balance out the levels.

    So are Fluvals pretty quiet?

Dead silent. I put my ear right next to my 405s and still had to touch them to make sure they were on. Even the massive FX5 is inaudible. You can tell the difference when it kicks on and off, barely. But people have slept in that room with no issues.

That's not normal. There's something wrong there. I have a 2215 and a 2026 running about 6 feet away from me right now and I can't hear either one. The only thing I can hear is the slight hum of the Emperor 400 another 3 feet past the canisters and a slight trickle of water because I need to top up the tank. Eheims are one of the quietest filters I've ever seen. Look at the Eheim 2213 for that tank, or one of the Ecco line canisters from Eheim, they would be great for that tank.

Yea, don't get me started...I don't think it's working right. I watch particles drift within 1/4" of the grate & it doesn't suck it up. I called Eheim right after I set it up & they said that I could send it back & they would test it. However, if it was working properly they were going to charge me return shipping (as they should I guess). However, I figured with my luck it would come back normal & I'd be out another $50 plus my time. I guess it's not really that loud, but there is the hum that you mentioned. At night that hum would be amplified.
    Thanks for all the input!
