Layed Eggs again

Well, after the discus stopped laying eggs for the fifteen or so time (due to daylight change they stopped or that is what it appeared to be caused by) I moved them into the main tank with the other discus. I did this because they acted very fearful being alone - always hidding near a filter input ... boy, did that change when they had companions. They not only became bold and took over center stage but terrorized the other discus into corners. Of course, this was because they decided to lay eggs again (as I discovered the next day.)

One good thing, I saw that the eggs (90%) were, in fact, fertilized (boy, do unfertilized eggs appear different.) So, the male is doing his job.

Since the other discus needed food, I did this but this action caused the parents to start to rapidly eat the eggs. So I pulled the eggs out (they used some natural wood) and put these eggs back into the old discus breeding tank (still running - I was keeping it ready in case the transfer failed.)

I will not try and raise these eggs but will watch them a few days to see if they develop (too late to reintroduce the parents.)

So, I learned some lessons

- a bare bottom tank with no live plants is not such a good idea. Also, the location in a more quite area with natural lighting (but indirect lighting) are bad ideas for fish raised in a regular tank located in a normally used room, and with fish use to living within a school.

I guess, in a few days, I'll relocate them back but make the tank more like they are use too.

Well done... and thanks for letting us all know.

I must admit I would try to raise those eggs if you have the time but would think it would be much easier if you can get the parents to handle the first 2 weeks of care of the next batch.
