It's an old 200 AquaClear and it's been sitting for a year I think. It recently began to run loud, sounds like the impeller to me. Why could this be? What should I do?

    Ram,
Unplug it, pour the water out, and check the impeller. There could be too much gunk in there or the magnet has chip or a crack in it. It could also be out of round.
Easy to replace the impeller, since the AC filters are popular and replacement parts are easily found.

Sorry to hear of your filter woes. If everything checks out and the impeller looks to be in decent shape try adding some plain petrolleum jelly to the magnet part of the impeller it sometimes helps lube up old filter parts :)

Haven't been able to take the filter down yet. I have another question on this filter. What media's can I add to provide mechanical chemical and bio filtration? Right now I have one single sponge

Personally, I use Boyd's Chemi-Pure in my canisters for that purpose. It comes bagged, and you'll be surprised how clear and stable your tank is after a month of using it.

ACs can at time just get noisy. Usually you can just unplug and plug it in again. This usually will quiet it back down. Sometimes you may have to do that a few times. There really is some slop in the impeller set up on these filters, but normally they run just fine. Also right after a good cleaning they can run noisy until some gunk builds up to cussion the impeller some.
