  1. Default 55gal salt question

    Hey guys,

New to the forums. Need a question answered please if you can help. I have a 55 gal aquarium that was started as salt but the fish have long been gone and its been sitting empty for quite a few years now. I'm working on setting it back up again but as a fresh tropical fish aquarium. I believe I have a wet/dry filter (box with little blue balls in it down below the tank itself). My question is, is that filter still good enough to use as long as its been flushed out well with vinagar and water or do I have to totally scrap the system and get a whole new system? If I have to scrap the system, what would be a good "cheap" system to run through it? I do have a penguin 550 power head to that I haven't even taken out of the box yet.

Thanks for any help I need all I can get.

As long as you clean it out well you will still be able to use it. That wet/dry will work rather well for you actually. You may want to make sure the whole thing still holds water though, if it has been too long there is a possibility that the seals have dried out and the tank may leak.

    Can't see why not.

I have done it to my 75 gallon with no problems so far.

As to to the Silicon drying out don't know that it had a Life span of a certain amount of years but I am learning that it might.

    Strange indeed.

I also used my DIY trickle filter with no problems neither.

    Good luck.
