What do you need to clean? How long have you had your filter? Generally, you only want to clean your filter if it gets clogged with debris. And if you do decide to clean things, only use your tank water because you don't want to destroy the beneficial bacteria that has built up in there or it will set back your cycle.
I, unfortunately, don't know any specifics about cleaning an Eheim filter (if that's what you're asking). I'm a Filstar guy!

What do you need to know? Everything you clean make sure you use water from the tank to clean it. Don't replace any of the pads simply clean them out. If you want to replace the top filter pad that's fine but not needed.

I replace my fine filter about once every month or two.
