Welcome! I personally would never recommend Bettas and Guppies to be mixed. In my experience, Bettas are attracted to the fancy tails on Guppies and some other fish. I can't say about the Barb without knowing what kind, but common Algae Eaters grow way too large for a 5G tank anyway.
But ask away any questions you have. The community here is pretty friendly.
BTW, my tank is also a 5G hex. I just have a Betta and a Bamboo Shrimp in it, and some live plants. I don't have any algae right now but I would consider an Otocinclus Catfish for if it does start to show up. They don't grow very large.
