    Unless you often see your fish at the surface gulping for air ,an airstone isnt necceasary,I use one at night in my tank because there seems to be a need for that reason.I do agree that with low light plants such as the ferns and vals that it wont hurt to use a stone.

    Trace or Trace Elements are Micro nutrients for plants. It's essentially a type of fertilizer. I use trace elements for my low-tech tank because I happen to have extra from my other higher tech tank. Even though it's not necessarily needed, I do find dosing a little every other day gives my plants a nice little boost.

    Trace elements include: Manganese, Zinc, Boron, Nickel, Copper and other traces of things.

    I'm currenty using Flourish Trace for my Trace Elements. But there are cheaper alternitives out there like Plantex CSM+B.
