Is it a good idea for a begginner to keep 1 plant in an aquarium to see if they can keep them, and then get a bunch more or is it better to just colonize the tank with plants right away?

The substrate i have is some pea gravel. The lighting is a 15 watt flourescent bulb and the tank is 10g. I am thinking of a java fern.

Might as well throw some Java or Willow moss in there, too, then..

personally my favorite beginning plant is anubias barteri or anubias nana. they are so easy to care for and will grow or shed leaves depending on the light available. they can be a good indicator of how much light another plant might get as well. i'd say a bit of java moss and an anubias and your tank will thank you.
    10g- planted freshwater
    10 gallon freshwater, planted tank
1 Redigobius balteatus (rhinohorn goby), 2 Trichopsis pumila (sparkling gourami), 5 mircorasbora erythromicron (emerald dwarf rasbora), 1 Celestichthys margaritatus (celestial pearl danio), 1 Dermogenys pusilla (wrestling halfbeak), 6 amano shrimp

Yup, these are good, too, but they are slow growers, so better if you have some algae eaters to help keep the leaves clear..

How's the growth of your been, karbomb?
