I, too, was a little confused when I read that canisters provide chemical filtration using carbon or ceramic rings, then alternate chemical filtration as the third stage, also using ceramic rings. I've always understood that carbon alone provides chemical filtration, and the ceramic rings are for biological filtration. Did you mean to say biological instead of chemical when referring to them?
I do believe some other posters have caught this already, but just in case there's something I'm not understanding correctly, perhaps you can clarify.
