CO2 lowers hardness, as well as pH..
But the set-up is mostly for the benefit of plants, and the set-up costs about as much as an R/O system would, so.. :)75g - 20 cardinals : 7 panda cory : 5 Julii cory : 9 zebra danios : 1 CAE : 2 SAE : 2 yo-yos : 1 BN

You could also try filtering through peat. That will also lower ph and hardness.
Or, you can do a 50% water change and just use distilled water. That, I found will do it too.75 gallon planted tank with discus, GBR's and cardinals

Its really hard to remove hardness from water. Thats why people hook up water softeners to their houses and but salt every month because thats about the best way to do it. Adding peat and co2 might help a little bit but your hardness is so high that it probibly wont help much. Doing a water change and adding water that has a low hardness is about the best thing you can do.

Well, getting an R/O system may hurt at the start, but is definitely cheaper in the long run..
Peat moss has to be changed out relatively often..75g - 20 cardinals : 7 panda cory : 5 Julii cory : 9 zebra danios : 1 CAE : 2 SAE : 2 yo-yos : 1 BN
