The current feeling is that Cycle doesn't do anything.

But I did use it for years and I don't think it's hurt. I stopped using it about a year ago and haven't noticed any difference.

Take your time, you're putting in an investment, and once established you will be good to go for years. Most people on this site like a fishless cycle by adding ammonia. I however, I prefer to cycle with fish, have not lost any yet due to cycling. I am anti-chemical for my tank. Most chemicals either don't do anything or have bad side effects. So why take the chance (Just my 2 cents)

I gave up on Bacteria suppliments a long time ago. The only thing I use anymore is dechlorinator. Most of those "off-the-shelf" products have a short shelf life anyway. I'vee cycled tanks using them and without then and the results are no different, it's still 4-6 weeks.

I think the only difference it does is limit the extent of the ammonia and nitrite spikes.

We used it in our first tank for fish cycling and it went well. Still took 4-5 weeks, but the ammonia never got too high (1-1.5 ppm).

But by preference, go fishless. Better for the tank, the fish and your back (no water changes!).
