Thread: pregnant guppy~

  1. Default pregnant guppy~

I have this guppy in my fry tank as she is pregnant and I assume about the birth. She is swimming up and down the tank, not eating, and is rather large. How long should I keep her in here if she doesn't start her birthing process soon? She seems to leave the fry alone so they aren't in any danger so far from her. I tried to take pics of her so you can judge what I should do. Thanks....

The swimming up and down the glass in a pregnant guppy is a typical sign of giving birth When a female gives birth she releases a hormone which supresses the eating of the babies for 6 hours... so once they are born you have 6 hours the time to get them safe or add some moss etc. where they can hide in.

I have black mollys and they just gave birth to 17 little ones on march 1st. and I knew she was pregnant but I didn't separate her or do anything since I was afraid if I change her home she would hold the babies in. But I did noticed that the male stuck around her through the whole deliverying process and it actually looked like he was helping her push or something and we were separating the young ones as they came out. and everybody is doing just fine. hope this info helps you somehow.

I personally don't think she is quite ready yet. Yes, she is pregnant, but I would say from the pic, she is a mature female guppy, and I would give her about another week or so. Mature female guppies can spawn up to 200 babies at one time....Thank god my wife isn't a guppy! So, I would give her some time.

Pen-plax has a great nursery. It has 2 compartments. 1 for mom, and a small container off to the side for the brood. Operated by an airstone, it literally sucks the babies into the holding chamber. You may want to check on that.
