is there a piece of glass that acts on the platform there that isnt visible here or does the tank balance on the metal outer edges?

I have a 12g bowfront that I need a stand for. Does this fit only a rectangle tank?

No glass. This stand is only good for rectangular tanks that fit the dimensions exactly as the rim of the tank sits on the metal.

The middle parts of the bottoms of most tanks are usually not supported by the stand even if it has an even surface like a table or counter because most tanks have plastic rims which elevate the glass itself up off of whatever surface.

I would look for a stand designed specifically for bow-fronts

Yes, it's important the stand fit the tank.

The exception is strongly built counter or furniture type stands...you can go smaller than the stand...but you should never get a tank larger than the stand...
