  1. Default Are my neons scared of light?

My neons are bottom dwellers, I thought they were mid-dwellers. But when I turn off the light they start swimming all around the tank.

do I need floating plants or something? is java moss ok?

Java moss doesn't float it sinks. Try duckweed.

They go crazy because the sudden light change jumps them. Try acclimating them to light slowly by let some light in the room for 15 minutes then turning the aquarium lights on.

they are mid dwellers but when the lights go on they wake up and go normal if you want it to be abit more natural try turning on the room lights then one bulb then the others one by one how every many you have, its just like you waking up you dont like be suddendly blinded by lights do you?

make the lighting gradual and you will have much more happy fish (sorry for miss spelling im drunk)

I think neons also come from the black water regions in the amazon. So they don't really like strong lights anyways because they are use to the water being murky.

I think a lot of fish don't like the bright lights. It's not like the sun shines on them in real life but rather they get mutted light. My angels hid all day when my plants lights were on and my firemouths do the same. They feel vulnerable with a bright tank and if there are plants, there should be a lot of tall ones with hiding places. Trouble being that you can't buy them large enough to have the effect right from the beginning.

    Interesting..

I was going to get some amazon frogbit for my tank..

I wonder if you can get fake floating plants, to supplement until the real ones take off?

It won't take long for them to spread, although frogbit is slower than others.

    From fastest to slowest IME
    watter lettuce
    Red Root Floaters

Floaters will definitely make the neons happier, also tall plants that provide shade, my neons and cardinals stay under the swords
    Amazon Frogbit

Frogbit should double in size in about a month, WL and RRF will do it in about 2 weeks.
