    Default Nano Reef

    Ok, so the nano reef i've been planning for weeks now is finally coming together. Just got back from my LFS with live rock and my tank half-filled with saltwater waiting for it at home. Did a very fast arrangement to get the rock looking ok for now, and snapped a few pics! I'm also including tank parameters and a list of equipment i've gotten and a price total so anyone interested can do an approximation if they were thinking about making a saltwater tank.

    Here is my list so far.

    ::Equipment::
    10 gallon tank (had one lying around) $10
    20" 40W PC light (upgrading to a 110W PC in a bit) $52
    Koralia 1 powerhead $40
    Caribsea live sand $40
    14lbs live rock $84
    75W visitherm heater $26
    Power Strip digital timer $35
    Instant Ocean salt $24
    Rio nano protein skimmer $20
    ATC refractometer $45
    12 gallons R/O water from LFS $6
    ---------------------------------------------------------
    Total = $382

    ::Parameters::
    S/G = 1.025
    temp = 76F

    i'll get the rest of the water chemistry from my test kits sometime tonight or tomorrow after I take my brother out to eat for his birthday.

    Now for some pics

    Here is the empty tank with a cut-out of blue paper I got and taped to the back.

    Here is the tank with live rock that I spent 2 minutes arranging.

    And within 3 minutes of the live rock being in the tank I found a hitchhiker. This was the best photo my camera could take and still be able to make out anything. The only way I can describe it is, it has a white body with a very light yellow center, it's 1cm in size, it has 7 arms, and looks like a tiny type of sea star. You can't really see it at all in the photo but it is in the middle, it's the white blob with a dot in the center.

    Hope you enjoyed and come back when I update :D

    Just noticed the little thing in the secondphoto, you can see it a little better. It is about 1/4 of the way from the left side of the tank, and about 1.5 inches off the bottom. You can see the little spot in it's center. Anyone know what this might be? My guess is a nudibranch of some sort which I don't want in the tank, but I would like to make sure before I do remove it.

    The closer in I put the camera or the closer I zoom in the more blurry it gets. I took like 10 pictures of it and that third one was the only one ever close to something.

    Just removed the asterina starfish because I read a site that said 7-legged ones were predatory and could damage corals. So better to not take a chance by leaving it rather than taking it out.
