  1. Default Man, I'm getting so mad at my fish

I love them SO MUCH but I'm getting real irritated b/c everytime I MOVE they get scared and hide for 20-35minutes. They aren't as bad as day one. This is day 5. Will they get over this or are all fish skittish and scared all their life? My biggest fish, a blood parrot, is so scared that when i feed them he won't come out for a long time and all the food is gone and i add a little extra and im afraid i'm going to overfeed them or make too much ammonia. shoo. ha ha. How do you know how much food is too much? ....especially when one of them won't come out for a while. We are about to spend $1500-2000 on a saltwater set up and I want to know ahead of time if all fish are scared and hide from you all the time b/c I might think twice about spending so much money. Thanks to you all.....and please don't think I'm a meanie.....I just want to enjoy them and I want them to be happy and not stressed out and scared all the time. I'm actually getting to the point where when they hide sometimes I roll my eyes. lol. ...help....

Don't makle any sudden movements or ever tap on the glass... don't run or yell around the tank as they can feel the vibrations..... turn the lights off give it a couple minutes sit down in a chair infront of the tank... turn one side on wait a couple minutes then the other..... you have to build a relationship with them... It's like a dog when its brand new, if you call it I bet it won't come but after a while it will learn. Good luck and oh welcome to ac!!

did you cycle your tank before introducing your fish?
what types of fish do you have in your tank?
fish generally will become more outgoing if they feel safe in their environment. all of my fish are very outgoing and love to be the center of attention. they almost never hide.
certain fish will hide because of natural instinct.
did you do any research on your fish before you got them?
it sounds like they are stressed out.
    edit:
your fish will feel more comfortable with good water perimeters and lots of plants and hiding spots.
    what is your tank size?

I'm a real quiet lady...so that's not a problem. I even talk to them real soft. ha ha.

    Yes, I cycled beforehand.

They play and act happy and actually crack me up at times but are real scared of me when I move. They act normal when I knit but if I get up or pick my drink up or pick something up they all hide.

I have blood parrot, red devil, yellow electric cichlid, and an orange cichlid with white spots. Yes, I know you're not supposed to mix them. I know that now. My granddalughters bought the tank for me when they visited and the lady at Wal-Mart where she bought the red devil swore it would be fine and that she has those same kind of fish and they don't fight. "They get along fine". The next day they bought the other 3 at Petsmart and later went back to buy some frozen food and asked what kind of frozen treats to buy them and they asked what kind of fish they had and the woman flipped out and said you're not supposed to mix them. I don't know what to do ! I'm so attached to them all ALREADY. I really needed these fish. One of my granddaughters is going to start her own 2 tanks and said she could take them off my hands if they are mean to eachother in September or August. Will they be ok until then? They seem to get along fine unless they go into the fake log all at once they pick at eachother a little bit but other than that they act happy. ?????

Oh sorry. 40 gallon with gravel and a log they can all fit in. The water is good to my knowledge. My granddaughters were testing it with a kit their friend let them use for the first week and then the fish have been here for 5 days.

I have 3 Lilly bulbs in there. They're supposed to grow in a week or a week and a half .......can't remember which.

they are still new... it takes patience..... I know you want to see them zip around but give them their time to acclimate and they'll be fine....

i don't know to much about cichlids, except what you know, that your not supposed to mix them. i also think your tank may be a little on the small side for some of those fish. feed them a good diet, give them lots of hiding spots, and they will slowly come out. (lilies don't really provide much cover, maybe get some fake plants in the mean time or real plants depending on your lighting)
pay attention to them, if they start showing signs of stress (wounds, tattered fins, hanging out on the bottom of the tank or on the top for long periods of time, lethargy) you are going to have to separate them way sooner then august.
    edit:
really if you put some fake plants in there to give them some cover they will start coming out sooner then later. the more bare an aquarium is the more unnatural of an environment it is for the fish. research their natural environment and mimic that for them, it will make them happy and they will love you for it.

when you feed them feed them twice a day and only what they can eat in under two minutes....... scoop any excess food up as this can cause ammonia and nitrite levels to rise when decomposing...

i would say feed them what they eat in 5 minutes.
just make sure you keep up with your weekly 25%-30% water changes as well.
