Default My DIY sump filter, opinions?

    0 Not allowed!
    Hi there,

I'm making a sump filter for one of my 32g (120L) tanks, if it works with a good performance i will probably make more sumps for my other tanks, you know canisters are pricey!

i made a 3.5g (13L) tank as the main body of the sump ( 15*25*35 cm = 6*10*14 inch ) with 2 holes for inlet and outlet:

and used glass as divider to provide some separated cases for different media and for a good water flow through the sump and more efficiency.

(i put those 2 boxes under glasses to hold them till the silicon become dry)

also i attached small pieces of glass to each side of dividers to put plastic nets on them to hold the media.

testing process seems to be successful!

I'm gonna use sponge, floss, bioballs and ceramic rings respectively. the pure volume for the media is 6L (1.6g).

the whole glass, silicon, inlet and outlet cost me just 6$ and the remained work is getting some sort of pipes or hoses to connect inlet to a powerhead inside the tank and outlet to the tank.
i'm gonna use a powerhead rated for max. output of 600g/hour. thats pretty powerful.
the sump will be placed upper than the tank so water will return to the tank automatically.

now what is your opinion about it? will i have a good filtration for the tank?

How are you pumping the water to and from the sump?

Looks like it should work just fine. Keep us posted.

Looks very good and should provide more than enough filtration.

If you want to increase the biological filtration capacity, try putting aerators in the compartment near the inlet. That way you'll have more highly oxygenated water for the bacteria.

For the mechanical filtration, use something that'll filter out fine particles and for the biological filtration, ceramic bioballs or sponge media will be great. I'd go with a sponge, floss, bioballs, bioballs in the 4 middle compartments and leave the 2 ends empty.

Keep us posted about how it works out.

    Thanks friends,

spudbuds, water is pumped to the sump by using a powerhead inside the tank, it will send the water to the sump inlet ( left hole in the pics ) through the hose, and the outlet needs no pumping because i place the sump somewhere higher than the tank so according to the gravity rule the water will go out from outlet and return to the lower tank by itself.

there is another kind of sump that is placed under the main tank, there you have to create a hole in the bottom of the tank then water will go automatically to the sump and for outlet you have to use a pump to send the water up to the tank. but it needs some important considerations to prevent overflowing. there you have to provide an exact balance between inlet and outlet but here in my model it doesn't matter how much water the pump enters the sump, the same returns to the tank by itself. only important matter is the sump should be placed higher than the tank and you should notice that if something blocks the outlet, sump will overflow.

sasquatch, thanks for advices, so i can put an airstone in the inlet compartment.
and yeah i have some good sponge and floss to use there.

i will post about the next steps.

Looks great! One of the guys at our lfs was going to build us one out of a 75gal, but I don't think it'll fit under the tank in the stand. But yours looks top notch!

Actually, for a sump below the main tank you do the same thing you're planning, just backwards.

You make a hole near the top of the main tank where water will overflow into the sump and them use a pump to push it back up into the main tank. The water coming out of the main tank equals the water pumped out of the sump and if the power goes out, the water stops flowing out of the main tank.
