I'm new to fish, but I've done very well.

I setup a 55gallon tank. I brought home a ton of flat rocks from a vacation and built some structures. I filled it with tap water, and let it sit and filter for 3 days. I put about 2 inches of white gravel on the bottom. I have a Lima Shovel Nose Catfish, a Pike Cichlid and two Hujeta Gars swimming around my tank, and they seem very happy. All of the fish have been living in my tank for about 3.5 years now happily. No fighting or anything. I just feed my fish little goldfish, worms, crickets etc.. I've never put a single chemical in the water, nor have I even got my water tested. I clean out my tank once a year. I keep the light off, so no algae grows :)

My friends do things more by the book, and use tons of chemicals to get the 'perfect' water balance and such. But they have no luck with their fish. I find it funny.

I guess my uncooth way of taking care of fish has worked :)

a lot of it has to do with getting fish that match your local water parameters. many people get the fish they like and then try to screw with the water to get it where the fish should have it, but it is much better to get the ones that fit your water.
